Types of Communication

Communication is a process of exchanging information, ideas, thoughts, feelings and emotions through speech, signals, writing or behaviour. It is necessary for building any kind of relations, for example, a relationship between a patient and a doctor, between the teacher and pupils, between the director of any enterprise and his staff, between family members, etc. The communication between people changes according to their functions, spheres, activities.

The main types of Communication are Verbal (Oral and Written) and Non-verbal Communication.

In oral communication, spoken words are used. It includes face-to-face conversations, telephone conversation, video, radio, television. One can guess lots of things by oral communication (facial expression or body language), but oral communication requires a quick reaction; you never know beforehand what question you can be asked for.

Written communication is something we do while writing, such as reports, essays, emails, letters, notes, chats. The advantages of written communications are the following: while you write you can edit or revise what you are writing before it is sent or presented. You can save it for further study. I think writing is more easy that speaking.

For me, it is always easier to write than to talk about anything. While you write, you don’t see the person whom you’re speaking, you can tell secret things even to unknown people. I have found lots of friends from different countries using written communication via mails and chats. The disadvantages of written communications are that if you are presenting something in a written form you do not know who will read it. This means you will have to take more care of what you say and how you say it.

There is another type of communication non-verbal communication. Besides gestures, body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, it also includes appearance, clothing, room design, decorations. Communication can also be formal and informal. Formal communication is used during corporate meetings, conferences, etc. In formal communication, slang is not used and correct pronunciation is required. Informal Communication is just a casual talk. It happens among friends and family. In informal communication use of slang words is not restricted. Informal communication helps in building relationships.
